Just got my 8300 and started putting my contacts into groups, but ran out of room in the group I needed. Is there a way to extend the group. Stan

I've been working for hours trying to figure out how the LG VX8300 transfers mp3s. "How do I transfer the mp3s from my memory card to my phone memory? "

You can't copy music files from the memory card to the phone memory, unfortunately. This feature isn't enabled.

do you know if it is possible to use a plam pilot to dial the 8300. I can pair my device to my palm and laptop but the dialing features do not seem to work. Curious if you know. Thanks

Great site. Any Mac specific tips would be appreciated. bitpim worked fine for me. I made my first ringtone using iTunes and downloaded it to the VX8300 with bitpim. Anyone know of a way to get and download games? Or is that strictly vcast? Thanks.

Anyone know how to change the defaults in the fields of the Calendar? I hate having to change the ring every time and setting it to not ring 15 minutes before the memo is due.

This website has been a lifesaver - thanks! My question is this: is there any way to make the FRONT display stay on, as opposed to going black after 5 (or 10, 20, etc) seconds? I hate that you can't see the time on the front without touching a button to light it back up first...

Blogger Andy Moskowitz said...

Sorry, because of the technology of the front display (OLED), it would drain too much battery to leave it on all the time, so this isn't allowed. This is because the backlight and the display are one in the same in OLEDs.

I just purchased an 8300. I bought Verizon's Music Kit which includes a Music Sync cable. Can I use this cable to transfer data or do I need a seperate Data Cable? Also if I buy the Data Cable can I use it to transfer Music?

On the 8300 is there a way to create music playlists other than directly on the phone?

I have the 8300 and have found your site very useful. My question is, is there a way to make the sound in the earpiece more clear and the same with the speakerphone as well? Thanx :<)

I don't believe so, although I haven't really had issues with sound clarity. Could your phone be defective? If not, you might find that a headset would have clearer sound quality, perhaps.

Great info on this site. Two questions to start with.
1. Is there a shortcut other then the * key to make the phone go into the Manner Mode?
The next one I can not find anywhere on the internet.
2. If I have 2 Bluetooth headphones (Me & Wife) can we both use the bluetooth to listen to ONE phone conversation?
Thanks

1. If you hold the volume down key for a couple seconds, all sounds will turn off, as well as vibrate. I wish this left the vibrate on, but it doesn't. To turn sounds off and leave vibrate on, I think you must hold the * key.

2. I don't know the answer to this one, but it sounds unlikely.

Larry,
That Second one is a no. At least according to the manual. It reads that it can contain up to twenty different devices, but can only connect to one at a time.

I have had my 8300 since May or so & been thru 3 B/T Headsets which all seemed rather faulty for the price I am paying. I learned via an LG rep that Motorola BT (I had BT500) headsets do not always pair very well w/LG's... Onto a Jabra(bt150) since I liked their Wired headsets, but very echoey on the receivers end plus no gel ear pieces like the wired ones. Yesterday I got the LG HBM500 with Noise reduction but so far 3 of 3 receivers have told me they hear themselves echoing and my air vents in the car sounded too loud for them. If i get more than a 2 feet from the phone I get static. Has anyone found a product which pairs well w/LG 8300 and is also compact? HELP!

Anybody know if there is a way to train the voice recognition. I would love to get it to understand the commands using a bluetooth headset. "Call" just isn't recognized.

Heya Andy! Is there a website out there where we can download free flash lite animations to replace the standard ones on the VX8300? The standard one's are pretty lame and I gotta believe there are some kewl ones in Netland. I dont' have time to make my own. Any help is always appreciated.

Anonymous: Yeah, press the Voice button, then the Settings soft-key, then Train Voice. I can't vouch for how well it works, though.

Tim: Try searching Howardforums.com. There were one or two last time I checked, though nothing extraordinary. Lemme know if any progress has been made on that front.

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the color bar on the outside display for the caller ID, for better contrast or make the print larger? Thank you.

Anon #1: Edit the contact, select the number you want as default, press the Options soft key, and choose Set as Default.

Anon #2: Sorry, I don't know of a way to do this.

Is there anyway to talk on speakerphone with the clamshell closed. I have seen many cheaper phones do this but I don't think our sweet little 8300's can do it.

Andy, Thank you for this site it's been an huge help and a great resource. I've found answers for all of my questions except one. How can I remove a mp3 ringtone that I have downloaded to my phone with bitpim? If I remove it from bitpim and send phone info with the "ringtone - replace all" option will it erase the default ringers since they're not on the bitpim list???

I just got this phone yesterday and have already found some great tips on this site, so thanks!
Question: When I take pictures with my phone, they look all grainy and pixelated. What is the best resolution setting to use with this phone? I think the pictures look better on my old Samsung! Thanks for any suggestions!

I found out how to fix my problem (though the people who sold me my phone wanted to call tech support, i said screw that)
Anywho, I just had to go into my security settings, and reset the phone to default. It worked, I don't know why, but it did.
As for pictures, I took one so far at 1280x960 and it looks decent for a camera phone. I was pleased.

Great site thanks for all the work...My question is the other night I plugged the wall charger in and forgot to take it off before I fell asleep. The phone was turned off. When I looked at it the next morning the phone screen was black like it was totally turned off. Usually after charging the screen has a picture of a battery and the words 'charge complete". So did the phone turn off completely when the charge was done? Is it OK to leave the charger on for an entire evening or will it damage the battery?

Bought myself a PNY microsd 1gb card with the expressed intent of playing music through my phone. Everything worked perfectly from enabling the mp3 player to formating the card, to getting the songs to actually play. The problem I am having is that the songs have horrible problems with stuttering, as If they need to buffer temselves, sometimes it won't do it for a minute or two, but it can sometimes be buffering more than it is playing. Defective phone?

Question: Can I change the font used for clock (and banner) on the front screen?

I can't hardly read the crappy font used to display the clock on the front screen, even with it in the larger "Digital" mode. The hollowed-out "outline" font they use makes the numbers run-together and hard to read, even though the white letters are on a black background (picture of my hand over the lens :-) ).

Is there anyway to change the font used to display the clock digits (and my name that is displayed in the banner above the clock)??

BTW, has anyone figured-out what the "Font Size" ("Normal" -vs- "Large") option really does? I can't see ANY text on the phone that changes size as I change the setting of that option.

Thanx.

Blogger Andy Moskowitz said...

The letters wouldn't be "outline" if you used a white background instead of black. Just a thought.

In the calendar import dialog box in BitPim, there should be a "Filters" button (there is for Google Calendars, at least). Click this and select "Disable all alarms". Then re-import your calendar to your phone.

Today I had my bluetooth connected to my vx8300 and I got a call. I picked it up and something weird happened and the bluetooth dissconnected but the clamshell was still closed and I was now talking to the person through the speakerphone. I was so excited that this happened because everyone is saying they havent figured it out yet. This colud be a breakthrough. Im thinking now there has to be a way to do it. Im going to mess around with it tonight now and see if I can figure something out.

I put a wrong word into the T9 word thing by accident, any way to remove it?

Also, anyone else having the caller ID on the front screen almost impossible to read because the screen and the font are white?

Hey Andy great site, there is so much good info here.
I have a little tidbit to add regarding the data throughput of the 8300 when used with Bluetooth to do the #777 wireless isdn type call over 1x. I currently have mine setup to do this with a USB Bluetooth adapted on a windows xp machine. Being in the field of networking myself I have found some simple tweaks to improve the throughput of the connection to the internet.

After following the steps on how to setup the connection open Device Manager and double click the “Standard Modem over Bluetooth Link” which is the phone. Then click on the “Modem” tab in the window that appears. Set the “Maximum Port Speed” as high as possible. This allows the PC to talk to the phone in an optimal manner. Next click on the “Advanced” tab then click “Advanced Port Settings” Make sure the FIFO buffers are enabled and set to their maximum value usually 14 and 16.
Click OK and close the open windows. Next click the Properties button on the dial up connection you have created for the link. Click the “Configure” button with the Bluetooth modem selected. Clear ALL the Checkboxes on this page, I have found through research and tests that the hardware flow control actually induces latency and degrades performance especially with streaming media. Next set the “Maximum Speed” to it’s highest value, once again eliminating any bottleneck and allowing the phone to connect at it’s highest speed possible. I have found this is the best configuration I have found and you should expect to see speeds of 110kbps down 84kbps up or true throughput on only 1x with 2 bars signal.

Enjoy :-)

Hey Andy, I'm not too sure If you missed me, or if you want me to post elsewhere; if so just tell me.

I'm having issues utilizing the 1gb microsd card that I bought primarily listening to music on my 8300.

At first every song would not get 10 seconds into the file untill it stutters as if it is trying to buffer the song.

After reading your MP3 conversion section, I thought perhaps I could do that, but the files would not appear properly no matter what I did, so Instead I though that lowering the quality of the music I have on the phone would help with the stuttering. I'm prety sure the phone doesn't have firmware even capable of replaying hi bit songs anyways.

So I made everything smaller, and it seemed like it was running fine untill a couple days ago where a wierd thing happened in which the last half of my alphabetically listed songs on the card were excibitting the same symptoms again spontaneously 3 weeks later.

Any advice, or refferals would be great. You helped me at least half solve my problem so far :)
