How to get Cheap Bluetooth for your VX-8300
Bluetooth makes it fairly quick and easy to transfer phone book and calendar information to and from your VX-8300 cell phone. There will be an upcoming tutorial on just how to connect your phone to your PC using Bluetooth, but before you can do this, your computer must be Bluetooth capable.
If you are not lucky enough to have a computer with Bluetooth built in, it can be obtained easily and inexpensively in the form of a Bluetooth dongle. These are small devices that look like flash memory keys which plug into your USB port...
How much does a USB Bluetooth dongle cost? They can typically run for about 20-40 through typical sources. BUT, no-name imported versions can be had much cheaper on eBay, and they will almost certainly get the job done just as well. On eBay they can usually be purchased for just 1 or 2, plus about 10 shipping (this is where they recoup their costs), for a grand total of about 12. To find these devices on eBay, try the searches "bluetooth+usb" snf "bluetooth+dongle".
Many of these devices come licensed for the Bluesoleil software, which I will cover how to set up in a future article.

I read somewhere (perhaps here) that there is a BlueTooth headset that can be used BOTH to (1) listen / talk on the VX8300 phone with other people, and (2) listen to WMAs on the VX-8300.
Is this right? If so, do you know the model? I'd love to have one Bluetooth headset device that could serve as BOTH a telephone receiver/mic and to listen to my MP3s (or WMAs).
Can you name any actual brand and model of a cheap bluetooth dongle? I'm sure there are definitely a few that don't work, so if anybody can vouch for one that works ok, please let us know. Thanks.
do you know if it's possible to do file transfers to the vx-8300? I read online that file-transfers are disabled on this model. Do your hacks fix that problem? Any info you have would be appreciated.
I just got my 8300 yesterday.
I am successfully connecting to the 8300 withthe Belkin bluetooth USB interface. I got it at CompUSA for $10 after rebates, and it works on both Mac OS X and Windows.
I have been seamlessly pushing MPs, ringtones and images to the phone from the computer. I have custom ringtones from my edited MP3s, using BitPim. I created a phonebook on the computer and migrated the data straight over to the 8300.
I think the only files that the phone doesn't support are the OBX file card objects. MP3/WAV, etc go over without any problems.
I wonder if this has anything to do with anything, but before I found out about BitPim, I renewed my DataPilot (DOH!), and the Susteen support site tells me that it will ONLY work with BlueTooth that utilized Broadcom/Widdcom, and the drivers MUST be version 1.4.2.21 or later.
Could it be that it is not DataPilot, rather LG that set that parameter, and that this circuit and driver must be used for any application between the LG VX8300 and your computer through a Dongle????
Right now I identify Belkin and Linksys Bluetooth dongles, as well as the MSI BToes and StarKey as definitely using the proper Broadcom/Widcomm pairing.
I don't think the LG has any restrictions as to what chipset it can pair with. I'd try with what you have, and if you can't get it working, there's always BitPim (for free).
Has anyone with the Verizon VX8300 been able to transfer whatever they please back and forth using bluetooth? If there's a trick to it, please share.. Thanks
And if you're able to transfer files, can you name the extension of those files ie .mp3 or .avi etc., also at what speeds do they transfer at?
What model/brand name of bluetooth did you use?
www.geeks.com has these for as little as $7.99 US now.
Was just wondering if there was anyway to utlize a bluetooth headset as a bluetooth dongle. My headset has a usb type connection for the ac adapter , and i have usb cords with the same connection. I have tried hooking the headset up to the PC with the usb cord and upon doing so it charges the headset. Just curious if there any drivers out there that could enable the headset to transmit data from the pc to the phone.
Matt, great fun reading this site. A question: do you think there's any way to configure the 8300 to accept Bluetooth SPP profile (Serial Port Profile) devices? Are there intermediary devices that can translate that signal to the OPP/DUN/A2DP profiles that the phone supports? (the only external keyboards I find are SPP). Thanks.

Matt? The phone uses SPP to connect to BitPim, but I haven't heard of anyone using a keyboard with it.
I've enjoyed responding to your hundreds of comments, but I've finally decided to disable comment posting now that I've created a better alternative. Please use the VX8300 forums for any further questions, where they'll me answered by me, or any number of other helpful VX8300 users.
